"Raven's Call"
Medium Date Framed Size Image Size
Pencil/ Color Pencil 1984 27-5/8"H x 19-5/8"W 19-1/8"H x 11-1/8"W
From Michael Babcock, “Beginning in the early 1980s, Susan changed her working surface to an acid-free paper and was no longer able to use her previously preferred method of creating details – sgraffito - the layering of oil pastels and then using sharp tools to etch the details. In order to create detailing on the new surface she used pencil and ink. Soon after she began creating pencil sketches (without pastels), usually with just a few hints of color from colored pencils. The themes here are quite familiar – the merging of animal (bird) with humans, lovely detailing and the use of white space.”

Wonderful detail throughout. There is hidden bird imagery in the woman’s wind swept hair. The woman’s eyes connect knowingly with the viewer. I don’t know what Susan’s intended message is but she would sometimes create the images of a couple where one was sighted and the other closed-eyed or blindfolded. That is the case in this beautiful piece.

This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued silvered, custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with a linen top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Museum conservation, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon-Boulet lower -right. Dated Feb 84.
