From Michael Babcock: Egyptian mythology held a special interest for Susan and Egyptian figures and symbols appear in many of her pieces beginning in the mid-1970s. Here Egyptology comes together with another of her favorite subjects, goddesses... in Bast – the goddess who appeared in cat form. The cat incarnation of the Great Mother Goddess, Bast was revered by the ancient Egyptians as a goddess of good health, longevity, pleasure and protection, particularly of women during childbirth. Talking about this piece in an interview Susan said: “I’ve always loved cats, and in doing Bast it was wonderful for me to put myself inside the feeling of what it must have felt like to be part woman, part cat. Cats have a certain [presence] and so to experience that presence is perhaps what I was trying to do with this image.”

The ancient portrayals of Bast is of a woman with the head of a cat; here Susan has painted her as a cat with the head of a woman with cat ears. It is worth noting that Susan always lived with and loved her cats.
