From Michael Babcock: This is one of five pieces in this show painted within a circular format. Because Susan had an affinity to working within a circle, Susan’s husband, Larry, invented a tool to cut circles in the mats. She said: “I liked working in a circle, because everything flows... it gave me the boundaries that I liked to work in.” About one-third of her pieces in the 1970s were created within a circular format.

TPG: Many of Susan's early works display a charm, a warmth and an innocence; words often used by those who met her, to describe Susan as a person. Here we have a magical portrayal, evoking warm memories, of a child’s exciting discovery of the puzzling ocean sounds emanating from the elaborate shell as she holds it to her ear. The child’s hair and garment seem to morph into coral like structures, the detail a result of Susan’s sgraffito technique. The eyes, (as they are drawn by Susan in many of these early works), often represented an inward looking spiritual journey. Fine detail and color throughout.

This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued gilt, custom wood frame. Archival triple-matted with suede bottom & middle mat and a linen top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet bottom-right. Dated Jan 73.
