From Michael Babcock: Much of Susan's work in the 1970s reflects the world of fairy tales and fantasy. Unicorns were an oft-recurring subject during this time, a fantasy substitute for the horses that were her first subjects on the farm growing up in Brazil. Unicorns appeared either as a central image or a background detail in roughly 10% of her work in the 1970s and were some of the most popular of the first of her published images (greeting cards and prints). Many of her pieces portray the unicorn and a maiden, a motif dating back to medieval times and found in tapestries, paintings and bestiaries. This was one of the last half-dozen unicorns painted by Susan. Although they remained extremely popular, Susan had exhausted the subject for herself. This piece represents a culmination of her style in the late 1970s before it changed in the early 1980s – jewel-like colors, sophisticated figures and the lovely flowing garment on the woman were often present.

TPG: A large, powerful and dramatic piece. The noble and spirited Unicorn rears up - stars and birds flow from it’s voluminous mane - birds fly off towards one of the three fantasy moons in the distance. The sweeping headpiece, gown and the unicorn’s dramatic rainbow tail merge, and are highlighted by a profusion of bird imagery - all part of the beauty of this mystical moment. Great color and an interesting use of Susan's sgraffito technique, to add texture and detail to the Unicorns horn and mane. This image was the cover of the Unicorn Calendar in 1999.
