| From Michael Babcock: Susan was always looking for inspiration for her paintings, finding it in music, poetry, nature, art, books and plays. Over the years William Shakespeare was one source – she painted perhaps eighteen pieces inspired by the bard, including 3 different versions of Ophelia of which this is the first. Something about this frail figure, an epitome of goodness, must have appealed to Susan. The central figure’s sinuous clothing and the way it tapers off call to mind these lines of the Queen from Hamlet: “Her clothes spread wide, and mermaid-like.”
TPG: A poignant portrayal of Ophelia's fate. The watery depths of Hamlet’s Ophelia is beautifully detailed and softly coaxed into being. The color palette is familiar to Susan and she adds definition with the delicate sgraffito in Ophelia’s gown and hair. In this moving piece, the easily overlooked and only reference to Susan’s ever present moon is found in the pendant that Ophelia wears.
This original work has been re-framed with an antiqued and gilt, custom wood frame. Archival double-matted with suede under mat and linen top mat. Acid-free materials throughout and re-glazed with Conservation Clear, Tru-Vue, UV protective glass. Signed by Susan Seddon Boulet, lower-left. Dated JAN 73.
