In 1991 Susan was still coming to terms with breast cancer that was first diagnosed in 1989. She talked of how, as a result of the cancer, "I went into my own deep feminine earth because the pieces got very dark." Since Susan's art always reflected what was going on inside of her own psyche, we can see this darkness in "Raven Woman", a figure in a cloak merged with the raven, a portrayal of a shaman merging with, becoming, her raven animal helper. The raven, as a symbol of metamorphosis and transformation, shows how Susan was using her illness as an opportunity for change and growth. Please Note: Shipping to continental United States ranges from $8.50 to $12.50 as determined by PayPal.
Of particular interest here is the eye on the beak of the raven and what appear to be many eyes on the shoulder of the figure – many of Susan's pieces have extra eyes in this fashion. For Susan, eyes represented "inner looking/outer looking" and this reinforces the idea of the shaman who goes deep into the inner world of spirit to effect change in this outer world.
